MXL: From Architecture to Industry Inflection Point

Production companies are no longer experimenting at the margins. They are standardizing. Rationalizing technology stacks. Prioritizing architectures that are open by design - not open by marketing.

That is where MXL steps forward.

What began inside AMPP OS as a high-performance shared memory architecture has evolved into an open, industry-backed Media eXchange Layer. Developed in collaboration with CBC and the EBU, and supported by a growing ecosystem, MXL is not a feature enhancement. It represents a structural shift.

It enables asynchronous media exchange across single-node and GRID deployments - delivering higher density, lower latency, and measurable compute efficiency across COTS and cloud infrastructure. In practical terms: better performance, clearer interoperability, and infrastructure that scales without adding friction.

At NAB Show 2026, that progress becomes visible.

You’ll see deeper MXL integrations. Expanded alignment with JT-DMF. Hardware onboarding through ACE-3901-GRID. New AMPP OS applications that demonstrate what true multi-vendor interoperability looks like when it is engineered, deployed, and proven in live environments.

This momentum is not theoretical. It is built by a community that designs, challenges, and deploys in the real world.

Las Vegas will be loud. The architecture underneath it is even stronger.

    Latest Updates

    Direct JIRA Integration Now Live

Support inside AMPP has taken a significant step forward with the introduction of direct JIRA integration. Users can now view, search, and manage tickets directly within the platform, engaging with support teams without disrupting live production workflows.

Creating a ticket is more intuitive with AMPP Assist, which can automatically generate a detailed request from your in-platform conversation, including key information such as affected workloads and timing to help accelerate resolution. Email notifications and seamless access to JSM remain in place, while critical on-air issues can be flagged for immediate escalation.

The new workflow is now live across workload interfaces, with additional backend applications coming soon, and the previous Slack-based ticketing method set to be phased out in the weeks ahead.

Playout X Release - Enhanced Live Control

This latest release strengthens live operational control with Preview Network Locking, a new “Back to Live” countdown in the Events UI, and synchronized Newsflash insertion across networks.

ST 2110 I/O Enhancements - Greater Timing Precision and Runtime Stability

Improved timing accuracy and stronger runtime stability across ST 2110 environments. Combined with enhanced Linux node tuning tools - including NUMA-aware IRQ pinning, CPU optimization, and an optional optimization service. These improvements help ensure more deterministic performance and reliable IP-based production workflows at scale.

Router Hub - Stronger Redundancy and Smarter Integration

Router Hub now supports enhanced redundancy, allowing multiple routing hub instances to share a Channel Group ID for improved failover and greater operational resilience. Source names are automatically populated as aliases, simplifying configuration and reducing manual setup. The upgrade to FFMPEG v8 also ensures improved performance and ongoing compatibility across media workflows.

                Layercake: Why Media Orchestration Matters

As broadcast workflows become increasingly software-defined, the challenge is no longer just having the right tools, it's making them all work together. That's where Streamcake comes in.

Streamcake, from Australian Digital Natives Layercake, is a Media Orchestration Platform designed to coordinate software defined technologies as a repeatable, end-to-end workflow. Streamcake can automatically provision cloud compute, spin up AMPP workloads, connect network transport, trigger captioning services, and configure streaming delivery, then tear it all down when the production is over. For broadcasters and rights holders moving toward software-defined, cloud-based production, this orchestration layer is the missing piece: it's what turns a collection of best-of-breed technologies into a repeatable, schedulable, cost-controlled operation. Without it, every production requires manual configuration across multiple platforms and vendors. With it, complex camera-to-consumer workflows can be deployed in minutes and scaled on demand - paying only for what you use, when you use it.
Layercake’s Streamcake platform is now available to buy directly from Grass Valley.
